Abstract:

With the popularity of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE), the clinical application of SMILE-derived lenticules has become a research hotspot due to the sufficient sources, good biocompatibility, and the ability of long-term storage. A large number of animal experiments and clinical studies have confirmed that SMILE-derived lenticules can be used for the treatment of hyperopia, presbyopia, keratoconus, and corneal ulcer and perforation. The safety and efficacy of this treatment are supported by many research studies. In order to provide reference for further research in this field, this review sheds light on the clinical application of lenticules and the issues that should be tackled before using them effectively and efficiently.

Key words: Corneal stromal lenticule implantation, Small incision lenticule extraction, Hyperopia, Presbyopia, Corneal ulcer, Corneal perforation
